Interference by egotistical parents in marriage, children's matters, and husband

Asked by Female, 42, Married
My parents interfere in my marriage and my children's matters. They always want to know everything and control everything. They are egotistical and keep coming over to my house and get support from my egotistical husband.

Hi Writer, thank you for writing in. It takes great courage to reach out for help.

It seems that you are facing difficulty in your married life due to interference from your parents. Its almost as if they want you to run your family and raise your children according to their views and do not leave any aspect of your married life un-monitored. They also visit your house more often than needed and have the support of their married son. I understand that it must be a difficult position for you to be in. You wish for them to give you your space and believe in you to be able to run your own family and not force their opinions on you.

Firstly, I would appreciate the courage in you for being able to manage so far. It certainly must not have been easy on you for your parents to not respect and maintain healthy boundaries.
Could you tell me a little bit about yourself and your parents as individuals?
How has your childhood been living with your family? Have your parents always been this way with you even before your marriage?
Since when has this problem started? What does your husband and in laws have to say about it? How do your children feel towards your parents?
Have you always felt this way towards your parents or has their behaviour caused you to feel differently towards them?
Answering these questions will help me understand your situation better and enable me to guide you accordingly.

Secondly, how would you like me to help you with your situation? What is it that you are hoping to seek through this counselling process?

Please respond back to continue our discussion. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Warm regards.
